Khairul Anuar Jalal is a self-taught Singaporean artist whose practice explores the everyday human activity of observing people and interpreting what we see.

His current work developed from an interest in making the process of painting imitate this activity rather than simply depicting it. Beginning with automatic drawing, he searches accidental marks through pareidolia until unfamiliar figures emerge. The process moves from uncertainty to observation, recognition and interpretation, mirroring the way impressions of other people can form from fragments of expression, gesture and behaviour.

Living within a contemporary culture increasingly conscious of seeing and being seen has intensified this interest. His paintings do not attempt to reveal who another person truly is, but record the possibilities created through observation and imagination.
